Highlights:

  • OpenAI announces the launch of the GPT Store next week, a platform for sharing and monetizing custom AI agents.
  • The GPT Store aims to democratize AI usage, offering diverse ChatGPT-based applications for Plus and enterprise subscribers.
  • Amidst previous delays and leadership changes, OpenAI’s move marks a significant step in AI technology accessibility and innovation.

OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to launch its online GPT Store next week. This initiative comes after a delay from its initially planned November release.

According to Bloomberg, an email from OpenAI to GPT builders unveiled plans for the upcoming store. It’s designed to be a hub where users can share and commercialize custom versions of the ChatGPT chatbot, aptly termed “GPTs”. However, the exact launch date remains unspecified.

OpenAI’s response to inquiries about the launch was not immediately forthcoming. Yet, the anticipation within the tech community is palpable. The company initially announced this venture in early November, aiming to gather the finest custom GPT applications. A revenue-sharing model with the most popular creators is on the horizon, drawing parallels with Apple’s groundbreaking App Store model.

“We believe if you give people better tools, they will do amazing things,” remarked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This vision, reported by the Financial Times, underlines the company’s commitment to enhancing user-AI interaction through natural language prompts.

December reports highlighted that the GPT Store’s launch was pushed to early 2024, with the delay attributed to ongoing improvements in GPT technology. November witnessed leadership turbulence at OpenAI, involving the temporary removal and swift reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman.

Debates within the company about the app store’s alignment with OpenAI’s mission and commercial objectives were among the reasons for Altman’s brief ouster. Yet, with about 92% of Fortune 500 companies employing OpenAI’s AI products, and a weekly active user count of 100 million for ChatGPT, the company’s influence in the AI sector is undeniable.

OpenAI’s strategy is focused on making GPT creation accessible to the masses, thereby encouraging broader engagement with AI technology. As the innovation matures and adoption widens, OpenAI’s GPT Store is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI interactions.
